Ford Escape vs Bronco Sport

The Ford Escape is the easier daily crossover. The Ford Bronco Sport is the SUV Ford still builds with standard four-wheel drive and off-road drive modes.

Ford’s Escape page says the model is tapping the brakes. Ford is discontinuing the Ford Escape for the time being, and support is not going away. There is no new Ford Escape model year to wait for on that page. If you want one, you are shopping the remaining 2026 Ford Escape and the used ones. Our 2026 Ford Escape guide covers that run-out in more detail.

The 2026 Ford Bronco Sport is a current Ford SUV. Every Ford Bronco Sport is four-wheel drive. The differences show up in ground clearance, cargo space, and fuel economy. Big Bend, Heritage, and Outer Banks use a 1.5L EcoBoost with 180 horsepower and 200 lb-ft. Badlands uses a 2.0L EcoBoost with 250 horsepower and 280 lb-ft. Those are the trim levels on Ford’s Bronco Sport page.

The short version

Escape

Last model year. Hybrid choices. Front-drive or all-wheel drive, depending on the powertrain.

Bronco Sport

Standard 4×4. G.O.A.T. modes. Badlands adds the stronger engine and a higher tow rating.

Towing

What is left of the Escape

Our published 2026 Escape guide lists four powertrains: a 1.5L EcoBoost at 180 horsepower with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, a 2.0L EcoBoost at 250 horsepower with all-wheel drive, a 2.5L hybrid, and a 2.5L plug-in hybrid. That guide lists combined EPA fuel economy up to 30 mpg on the 1.5L, 26 on the 2.0L, 39 on the hybrid, and 40 on the plug-in hybrid. Towing on that table is 2,000 pounds for the 1.5L, 3,500 pounds for the 2.0L with the tow package, and 1,500 pounds for both hybrids.

Cargo with the rear seats folded is listed at up to 65.4 cubic feet in that same guide. Ford’s current Escape page is a discontinuation notice, not a new spec sheet, so treat the window sticker on the Ford Escape in front of you as the final word. South Dakota is not one of the states where Ford held the 2026 Escape back for emissions rules.

What the Ford Bronco Sport adds

The 2026 Ford Bronco Sport page lists four trims: Big Bend, Heritage, Outer Banks, and Badlands. The 1.5L models have five G.O.A.T. modes. Badlands has the advanced four-wheel-drive system and seven G.O.A.T. modes. Fuel economy on Ford’s page is 27 mpg combined for the 1.5L models, 24 mpg combined for an Outer Banks with Sasquatch, and 23 mpg combined for Badlands.

Ground clearance is 7.8 inches on the 1.5L and 8.1 inches on the 2.0L. Length is 173.1 or 173.4 inches. Cargo space behind the second row is 32.5 cubic feet on the 1.5L and 29.4 cubic feet on the 2.0L or a Sasquatch model. Maximum cargo space is 65.2 cubic feet on the 1.5L and 60.6 cubic feet on the 2.0L.

With the Class II trailer package, Ford lists 2,200 pounds of towing on the 1.5L Ford Bronco Sport. Badlands is rated at 2,700 pounds. That is less than the 3,500-pound 2.0L Escape figure in our Escape guide. If the hitch is the reason you are shopping, say so before you pick the more rugged shape.

Which one to drive first

Pick the Ford Escape if

You want the hybrid, the plug-in, or the higher 2.0L tow rating, and you are fine buying the last model year.

Pick the Ford Bronco Sport if

You want standard 4×4, more ground clearance, and a current Ford Bronco Sport. These two Ford vehicles are the comparison. The Ford Bronco Sport is the more rugged of the two.
